Great homes are created from careful thought regarding how the inhabitants live. Tossing a cute pillow here, painting a room, buying new furniture or remodeling a bathroom does not make a house a success unless the items add to the comfort those living there. Comfort is as dependent on the function of an interior as it is on the big gushy cushion under your rear. Creating a comfortable home interior is something anyone can accomplish.
Comfort is big on the list of every one of my design clients. But how does one achieve it? Here are a few items which will make any home comfortable and enjoyable.
1. Comfortable reading chair with good lighting in a quiet area.
2. A kitchen that serves your lifestyle.
3. Adequate natural light.
4. A place to set down a beverage from every seat.
5. Areas of calm - walls with nothing on them, a bare table, and patternless fabric.
6. Clear dining or kitchen space/table to sit down and enjoy meals.
7. Dimmers on most light switches to adjust light levels.
8. Personality - a home must reflect who you are.
9. Color - even in all white or beige rooms there needs to be at least a pop of color. A room is a dead zone without it.
10. Welcoming entry.
"No room can be called perfect unless it has real comfort. It must be livable for you." Dorothy Draper, Decorating Is Fun! Ms. Draper made this statement in her 1939 book and it still holds true today. Each of these 10 items allow a home to achieve comfort which is a measure of a well designed home.
